Red Bus Cyprus (Redeman Buses Limited)
Red Bus Cyprus has been operating sightseeing tours in the Famagusta region of Cyprus since 2008. It was the first company to operate open top tour buses on the island. That was the beginning of many difficulties because Cyprus law at the time did not allow open top buses to operate on the island. After many representations to the Transport Ministry, the government eventually changed the law to allow open top vehicles. Further investment in the company was sought and it is now jointly owned by ex-pat Brits and Cypriot people. In the first year the company began with just one bus. As a result of the popularity of the tour, and many bookings for private hires, further buses were purchased. All of the buses carry girls’ names.

Love Buses introduced a sightseeing tour connecting the Cypriot and Greek parts of Cyprus in 2009, using a solitary open top bus based at Larnaca, ex Reading Buses Optare Spectra K703FBL, now TKWE 384. This company also appears to operate minibus shuttles to the airport. Andrew Webb reports that at the time of his visit in June 2011, the Spectra works a circular tour with 2-3 journeys, depending on which timetable you believe and also the whim of the operator. The printed leaflet from the tourist office suggests departures from the seafront at 11:00, 15:00 and 17:30. It appeared that it may not operate if not enough passengers board the bus.

Following a collision with a low bridge in 2005, it was acquired by Ensign Bus Company (City Sightseeing) and converted to open top in September 2006. It was first liveried for City Sightseeing Stratford-upon-Avon, but was not used there and in June 2007 it was rebranded for the Windsor tour, opertated by Ensign subsidiary Bath Bus Company. It was sold to DeKing Cars Ltd, t/a Love Bus, Nicosia, in June 2009, where it is now licenced as TK WE 384. Photo by Andrew Webb.

Bus privately owned. This is ex-Birmingham Daimler Fleetline EOF261L and is derelict in a yard just to the west of the old town. Andrew Webb reports that it has lots of broken windows, but a hefty padlock on the door. Not sure what it is doing there. For any visitors trying to find it, the number 30 bus runs past it. From the east (where most of the hotels are), the bus stops for the old town (most drivers announce this). The bus then continues towards the New Port through a short one way system. Alight at the next stop and walk back along the road to the small church and it is in the yard next to it. For photos, go in the morning as the bus faces east. If anyone has any more information on the owner of this bus or what it is used/to be used for, please contact us.

Left and Right: EOF 261L is a Daimler Fleetline new to West Midlands PTE in April 1973. Its location has been a mystery to us in recent years, but it has been found at the New Port at Limassol in June 2011 by Andrew Webb. It is in our database as previously with an unidentified owner in Cheshire, England, previously kept by Portway Motor Centre (dealer), Portway, Worcestershire. Photo by Andrew Webb.

It was acquired by City Sightseeing in July 2003 and converted to open top and sent for use on sightseeing tours in Florence, Italy, with specially converted passenger door on the driver’s side for use in mainland Europe. It was withdrawn from Italy in April 2004 after new buses were delivered, and returned to England, where it later worked on tours in Eastbourne and, for a short period, Cambridge. It was sold to Cyprus City Sightseeing in January 2011. Photo by Andrew Webb.

It was acquired by City Sightseeing in November 2003, and like TKZJ 040, was converted to open top and was to be sent to Florence, Italy, also with a passenger door on the driver’s side. However, following a decision to buy new buses for Florence, this bus was retained in England and allocated to Eastbourne from May 2004 until the end of the 2010 season. It was sold to Cyprus City Sightseeing in January 2011. Photo by Andrew Webb.

Bus used for promotional purposes. Thanks to 'Cyprus Directory' for the following information. The ERA Tour Bus is currently in service, being seen regularly around the Famagusta area and is so convincing that when the bus stops at pedestrian crossings and traffic lights we find that “passengers” attempt to board the bus. Unfortunately, tours on the bus are for potential property purchasers only and not fare paying passengers. We have also been asked about the bus by enthusiasts who recognise it as one of the famous “Routemaster” bus fleet that served London so well from the 1950’s onwards, so we are delighted to provide a potted history of the bus, part of a generation of remarkable and distinctive vehicles. ERA’s bus is RM581, which adopted the licence plate WLT 581. It is powered by an eleven litre diesel engine with a semi-automatic gearbox, a very innovative and troublesome feature at the time on its introduction. It left the Park Royal Garage and came into service in February 1961 on several London bus routes including service numbers 17, 63, 143, 214, 239, 253, 271, N93 and after many overhauls it was withdrawn from service in May 1985 after twenty five years of pounding the London roads. Later in September of the same year it was bought by Stephen Austin Newspapers, Hertford as a promotional vehicle and had its open-top conversion. Mike Nash, a specialist dealer in Weybridge in Surrey acquired the vehicle in September 2006 and ERA Cyprus bought the vehicle from Mike in July 2007, bringing it to Cyprus as a promotional vehicle. Contrary to mistaken reports in several reprinted articles, this made ERA Cyprus’ bus the first double-decker in Cyprus. ERA’s bus will be visiting various events around Cyprus.

Left: As far as we know, WLT 581 does not yet carry a Cyprus licence plate, and still carries its British plate of WLT 581. The red, white and blue livery advertising ERA Estate Agents is shown in this view. Photo by ‘Cyprus Directory’.
